I am curious how you guys master several foreign languages.

For me, it is really tough to learn and speak English and German simultaneously. I always learn one and forget the other.:curse:

You're right. It's really difficult to improve several languages in the mean while. Could be a very tough and painful process. So at the beginning you need to put an accent to one particular language and wait until it is significantly improved and almost reach the level of other languages to consider simultaneous learning.

michaellord110 发表于 2009-6-17 18:28

Hi, buddy!

I propose we do some translations. For example, we may translate a text from German into English.

What do you guys think of?
吃花生的大灰狼 发表于 2009-6-17 17:54 http://www.dolc.de/forum/images/common/back.gif
Glad to do so. But in my opinion, to translate between German and English is much easier than between English or German and Chinese, 'cause German and English have similar expressions and language systems.

Great. We may encourage each other to learn English or even try to organise some kind of English-related activities.

VinniDoll 发表于 2009-6-17 18:54

I guess she wanted to say that " I will make a progess with my persistence" or " My english will be improved if I am persistent"

however, the word "persistent" means:
"Someone who is persistent continues doing something or tries to do something in a determined but often unreasonable way"

though she expressed that she was determinded to learn, the word "persistent" wasnot really approriate in the context.

You're warmly welcome. It doesn't matter which level you are at, just get down to practice.
P.s. I didn't quite catch the meaning of this sentence: "I will get improve with my persistence". Mayb ...

some opinions about the usage of "accent"
I think here it should be used as either "you need to accent one particular ...),or rather "you "d better focus on one..."

having said that, I still think that to use "accent sth" in this context sounds a bit Chinese English to me.

"put an accent to?" I don"t think people really use this word this way.
"put an effort on sth" is more comman.

I could be wrong.it"s just an opinion. No offence. {:5_363:}

Thanks for pointing it out. To put an accent on/to something means to pay special attention to sth or to attach much importance to sth.'To focus on' is also a great expression though.

I really appreciate your way of learning English. To try to distinguish the subtle differences between similar words and expressions and put the right words in the proper situations would help a lot when you practise English writing.

Of course not. There's nothing to hide in terms of majors.{:5_363:} I study economics here and logistics at the same time.
Just stick to your way of learning, I think it would be very effective.

hello, everyone!

I'm excited to see this interesting post and would like to be in. After lurking for so long, now just decided to "bump" again{:2_231:}.

Firstly, a short self-introduction , maybe.....I'm now studying Business Administration (BWL, Diplom, like many chinese people do here:)) specializing in Finance and Controlling. During my bechalor study, however, i majored in international Economy and Trade. Now i've been almost three and a half years in Germany. Just in last month i handed in my final thesis and expect to get the diploma soonly.
Since the most lectures at the university are given in German, my english has been getting worse and worse. Ich hope that all the good english-speakers around here would inspire me again to pick up my english.

I will drop by down here every day and at last wish you all have a nice day though!

Great. Welcome on board! Just form a good learning habit and adhere to it. You would get your English improved soon. There is nothing to be ashamed of. Everybody makes mistakes, that's why we keep practising it.

michaellord110 发表于 2009-6-18 14:34

How does that help my English
patton 发表于 2009-6-18 11:12 http://www.dolc.de/forum/images/common/back.gif

To some extent. It helps you to improve English and German at the same time, although not as fast as when you focus on one particular language.

Welcome! That's already a good start. Nice to meet you.
There're some minor mistakes though. You may express it this way: After being hiden for so long,I finally decided to show up again. Just last week I handed in my final thesis and am expecting to get my dimploma soon."course" is a better word than “lecture", and "to brush up my English" is the proper expression.

I watched CNN news yesterday. But I couldn't even catch the exact meaning of a several-seconds news. There were some words hurdled me.
It was about the recent air crash happened on its way from Brazil to France. More than 400 pieces of fragments of the air plane and around 50 of corpses were found.
Then it was further reported aboutsome Brazil offical Information. That was the part that I totally did not understand.

michaellord110 发表于 2009-6-20 20:24

Generally well written. But the use of the word "hurdle" is inproper here. You may write: There are some words standing in my way of understanding. or There are some words disturbing/hindering/obstructing my understanding.

Latest news about the turmoil in Iran.
Yesterday Iranian supreme religious leader address his people and verified the victory of the president. He proclaimed that the gap of votes between the newly elected president and the opposition cadidate was too vast to enable manipulation and fraud. He also called for theo pposition supporters to dismiss the rally.
The supreme leader has been holding the power for two decades, who is the commander in chief, in hold of judicial power and entitled to dismiss the president. Acctually the Iranian president is just in the third place on the power chain, after the supreme leader and guardian council. The main role played by the president is to represent his country in face of foreign affairs.

You're welcome. Just grab a book that fits you and study from the first page. Your english would definitly be improved a lot after you finish that book. The question is merely if you could persevere till the end. That's why you need communication and get yourself motivated.
P.s. some mistakes: to care about. And the last sentence should be "that'll motivate/drive me to learn English.
