Toilet paper: cultural imperialism?
Frequently, the AIC directors are faced with the difficulty of reconciling the large cultural gaps between themselves and the children.
Eventually, the boys stopped peeing on the walls and proudly mastered the Sestern-style?toilet. However, Sholtys noticed that their hands smelled. Many people in India use water, rather than toilet paper, to clean up after going to the bathroom.
However, when the hand problem persisted despite various efforts with strategic water jugs and hand-soap, Sholtys decided to teach the boys to use toilet paper.
would have preferred to find a compromise because millions of people in India use water without their hands smelling. I am hesitant to discredit Indian ways of doing things,?says Morjaria.
She believes the AIC directors must choose their battles.
攅 realize we have a strong influence over them in everything we do, and we need to be conscious of that. Our last goal is to Westernize them. We want them to be proud of their own cultural heritage. The way we can encourage that is by showing our love of Indian culture, asking them to teach us things and always being humble.?
The directors hope to motivate the children to become involved in their neighbourhood through service projects. Currently, the children attend a cultural centre where they participate in activities like learning to play the tabla, an Indian percussion instrument.
