I work on a Ph.D in math. Feel at ease about German language. it is not a big deal when you apply a Ph.D position, even when you work on Ph.D in Germany. Of'coz, you definitely should learn a little bit to put up with daily life, to make sure you live confortable and easier, such as in shopping, travelling, relaxing ect,.
As for math, opportunities are floating over the whole Germany. Besidies MPL, the following Unis stand out in math: Bonn, TU Munich, Goettingen, Kaiserslautern, Heidelberg, TU and HU Berlin (both are closely conneted in research). You did not specify your research direction, I cannt afford further clues. However, the Uni above have a huge of funding resoure, which enables the professors to finance you very well. Meanwhile they are more or less internationally combined (Most of them offer an international doctoral program, which means they organize a uniform selection procedure as the americans do) so that you are able to live a good research environment in which English is more preferred ^_^. |
