据美国广播公司(ABC)报道，白化病是一种遗传性黑素合成障碍，特征为眼部、皮肤和头发缺少部分或者全部黑色素，相比之下，单是眼部白化的情况更为少见。白化病由隐性等位基因遗传导致。这种疾病能够影响哺乳动物(包括人类)、鱼类、鸟类、爬行类和两栖类动物。
