Debian, Suse or JDS
Debian vs. SuSE
Installation and default setup
No need to talk about that. Debian's current stable version puts a system on your harddisk that boots, period. If anything, it configures your network, but only if it is not USB or WLAN based. It does not care about X11 (graphical user interface), mouse, RAID, volume management, Firewire, Bluetooth, DSL, power management (ACPI/APM), CD and DVD burners, TV/DVB cards, sound cards and whatever other stuff you might have plugged into your computer. All of that stuff needs to be installed and configured manually with Debian, comparable to Windows (although Windows at least produces a GUI for the installation).
The default SuSE installation is desktop oriented: KDE desktop with SuSE specific welcome and support icons, OpenOffice, RealPlayer 10, Macromedia Flash plugins, audio and video players, CD/DVD burning, and not much more. The whole system is about 1.5GB including all applications. (There is the option of installing a "minimal" system which would only be about 400MB, without GUI.) The default KDE menu is clean with few but relevant choices of software, not cluttered with hundreds of applications, like the default Debian desktop was (but this might have changed).
For me, using SuSE meant that I did not have to compile my own kernel because SuSE already contains the half dozen patches that I needed for regular use, e.g. ReiserFS updates. It meant that I did not have to compile my own KDE because SuSE provides updated KDE packages for all of their distributions. It meant that I did not have to manually configure my system to automatically recognize and display USB and/or Firewire harddisks when I plugged them in, or manually compile and configure ALSA to work with my soundcard. That saved me quite a bit of work, but also fun - fun tinkering for which I do not have the time any more..

http://supportforum.sun.com/sjds/index.php?t=msg&goto=4517&rid=0
Actually, JDS doesn't have any customizations to SuSE. Technically, the underpinnings are SLES built to Sun's specs. Sun then took Gnome 2.2 and added 2.4 components. So the vfolders configure as 2.2 but the Nautilus browser is 2.4 as is the panel, etc.
If it was a pure SuSE distribution then you'd see all kinds of kernel hooks to KDE. They aren't there.
I pulled the gnome theme engine and put it on 2.4 and 2.6 of other distributions. I then added MS fonts from this site:
http://avi.alkalay.net/software/msfonts/
If you can grab the remaining font sets, you can get close to the look and feel. You'll also need the icons.
The desktop is highly customized and even has admin hooks to JDS Control Station 2.1. Without those, an admin can tell that you aren't using JDS.
You might want to take a look at our community site: http://jdshelp.org and see if the RPMS we built will help you.
Additionally, we have a howto that lets you install apt-get and pull packages from a University ftp site that builds packages.
http://www.jdshelp.org/howtos/extras/apt-get.php
One other thing that might have you wait: JDS 3 for Linux will be delayed because of SuSE. Don't be surprised if the next JDS 3 for Linux winds up on top of Debian. Don't quote me on that because I have nothing more than a rumor to go by. But, it's a rumor with some substance to it and I didn't make it up.
Debian, Suse, JDS, Mandrake, Slackware, Gentoo
I'd prefer SUSE, especially 'cause we are in DE.Here:
1. You get a huge user group to discuss with.
2.As far as i know, Suse has the most completed database for hardware support.
3. Also the best document and help system, easy for newbies and also for advanced users.
But globally, many tech. software providers would only support Redhat, also in most companies they use Redhat, if Linux.
other distro may be mainly stay for Linux fans.
Pls. feel free to correct me, if i am wrong. Thanks Gaga and Bebe for sharing your experiences and opinions.
1. Suse:Yes, I'm considering Suse because it comes originally from Germany, although it now belongs to an american company.
2. RedHat:It is said that RedHat is far away from other linux distributions. Compatibility is poor. So I won't consider RedHat.
3. Debian:Debian's advantage is that it belongs to GNU, which is a unprofitable organisation and Debian will not be influenced by any commercial company.
4. JDS:It has added many useful applications together with it's linux-based system. Another advantage for me is that I use the same GUI environment on Solaris.
As to Mandrake, Slackware and Gentoo, I have no idea on them at all...... They are for linux Gurus.
OK.I know many advantages of each linux distributions now. Can somebody tell me several disadvantages of some linux distributions?
。。。 I agree with U for the pity...
So it is better for U to setup a formal Homepage and write down your Blogs.
Later U are supposed tobe invited to such a VIP group to evaluate or develop...
your enthusiasm deserve premium..

[ Last edited by BeBe on 2005-5-13 at 17:38 ] Thanks for the encouragement. I have got an account in blogger.com and wil probably begin my blogging someday...
But what do you means "tobe invited to such a VIP group to evaluate or develop...".VIP group under bloggers, or some internet magazine, ororganisations? Originally posted by gaga at 2005-5-13 00:50

Originally posted by xiaobailong at 2005-5-13 20:06

chainloader +1
偶也是看了menu.lst才知道的。
kernel (hd0,1)/boot/bzImagexxxxx
boot Originally posted by gaga at 2005-5-14 23:21

apt-get update
apt-cache search foo
apt-get install foo
apt-get dist-upgrade (experts say n00bs should use apt-get upgrade)
get real time support at irc.debian.org
。。 ++ and --:
1. Installed software packages with with "base-config" and now have gnome. :-)
2. With apt-get, installed chinese fonts and packages. I can read chinese with debian now. :-)
3. But still don't know how to input chinese. :-(
4. Debian's (default) chinese font isn't beautiful at all... :-( solaris may connect with DHCP into internet now.
Mandrake
